LOS ANGELES — Artist Mike Kelley, described by colleagues as an “irresistible force” in contemporary art, has died, police said Wednesday. He was 57.

Kelley was found at his home Tuesday and it appeared he had committed suicide, South Pasadena Police Sgt. Robert Bartl said, without providing further information on the artist’s death. An autopsy was pending.

“Kelley’s work in the 1980s was part of how one defined the Los Angeles arts scene. He had a remarkable ability to fuse distinction between fine and popular art in ways that managed to perturb our sense of decorum,” said Stephanie Barron, senior curator of modern art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

A family friend who was concerned about Kelley went to his home and called 911, Bartl said.

The friend told investigators that Kelley had been depressed because he had recently broken up with his girlfriend, but no note was found, Bartl said.

“Mike was an irresistible force in contemporary art. ... We cannot believe he is gone. But we know his legacy will continue to touch and challenge anyone who crosses its path. We will miss him. We will keep him with us,” Kelley’s studio said in a statement that the Los Angeles Times published on its website.

Kelley’s work was included in the upcoming 2012 Whitney Biennial out of New York.

Kelley used many mediums and source materials. “He was always breaking boundaries and challenging convention,” Barron said.

The Year in Vinyl, Review from the KC Pitch

To close out the year the Kansas City weekly the Pitch printed a great article about local musicians releasing vinyl. Read about the feature HERE

here is a copy of my phone interview with the pitch staff writer Kent Slauderbach.

"So was it you that designed the cover?

No. It was actually Sarica Douglas [bass]. We went through like four different designs. It’s kind of funny - this is on a sidenote: We never actually got all the records from the record label. I don’t think they ever actually followed through and gave all of them to us. They were supposed to do 300, but we only got 25. So with that set, we made a really fast preliminary, really fast cover just for the 25 that we got. Then when we got the rest of 275, we were going to redesign it and have like a back sleeve and an insert and all this stuff. So the cover of that everyone knows is actually just a predecessor or for something that never came to be, which is a weird side note, but yeah, Sarica designed it. It’s based off a portrait of Drew Barrymore, and It’s kind of akin to Roxy Music album covers. We were going for that vide, but a little bit more folky, hand-drawnish thing going on.

Could you describe the vibe a little bit?

The vibe? Hm. I would say a little bit...(pause) I know it has a sense of nostalgia, and it’s a little campy, and um (pause) it’s kinda confrontationally blank. I think that’s the best way to describe it.

So if you did have the rest of the albums to fill with inserts or liner notes or whatever, what would those have been like?

We did a little bit. The back cover is the image of a temple or colonnade exploding from a horror movie. I think it’s called the Hunted. It’s the last scene and it’s a massive explosion, and the other side of it is the temple before the explosion, so it’s like back and forth. Then we had Sarica’s. We wanted to have multiple covers, and so those are what we were working with. And the insert, which I ended up doing anyway, has lyrical content, who recorded it, where we recorded it, who released it, the dates we released it, and how to contact us, so you know, it was pretty straightforward. I knew we wanted something... yeah, still on that confrontationally blank and graphic and colorful, with a sense of duality, like black and white, this and that, a and b - we wanted to have a sense of contrast.

Does it contrast with the music, too?

Yeah. I think it does and it doesn’t, I think, which is why we wanted back-and-forth. The release had six songs, and three have the same vibe, and then other three have their own vibe. They’re pretty different from each other, but they’re all kind of the same within that, you know, trilogy. So it’s like a double trilogy, like a dark side and a light side.

So that was A and B of the record?

So Sarica’s image is the A side and the B side is the exploding temple.

That never got printed?

Well it never got printed in print, but it’s online. Yeah, and I don’t really want say like, “[pissy] I didn’t get all the records.” But I’ll just the let public assume that the backside is the image of the exploding temple, because that’s what it was supposed to be like. I ended up just photocopying and scanning and throwing in stuff. It’s weird - it was with Record Machine label, and the lathe that cut it, I think, got broken, and all we got were the test pressings. So there were 50 of them, and they got 25 and we got 25, and I think basically the lathe like exploded or something, and it never followed through. Then Nathan the owner was like, “We we can redo it, but I need $250.” I mean I already paid $300, so I was like, you know, “This is your problem. Your on this side, I’m on this side. I mean I’ve paid for at least $400 on this plus recording time, so I want you to follow through on this, and then he never really followed through, and since then we haven’t really communicated. So that was kind the end of that. But there’s a new 7 “ that’s coming out that I have my hands all over, so I think it’ll be a lot more organized than the last one.

So there’s another 7“ coming, so does that mean you guys like doing that the best?

Yeah. We do. The band likes to do EPs or singles, and we like to take like an albums worth of material and put it on CDs and tapes and others stuff, but then we kind of pick some of the more defining of 12 songs, and then we send them to the EPs. I think we’ll do one EP release every year, along with like two cassettes and live stuff and other compilations, so we’re going to stick to like the four song, six song EP format. Unless we could only make 7”, but financially it’s kind of hard for an independent band, unless someone picks us up, so It’s easier to just load it up and have that to work with.

So, talking about the new one, what is your approach and what is the band’s approach to making albums, like album of vinyl, not just the music but the opening and closing and so on?

We trying to approach to like origins of how we go about writing songs and recording and releasing that them, but polishing that into vinyl, and for the self-titled one we went into a studio and recorded with Mike Tooly from Ad Astra, and we were trying to do like a straight-up studio Roxy Music art record, and so we wanted to work in a nice format. With the upcoming one, we going to do the inverse, and just warp the best songs with weird fourtracks and bouncing and mixing, and then go into the studio with this collection of you know 16 tracks on four tracks and then mixing it all down with Ashley Miller and Albert Redwine, and that’s the next one so, and I think we want to do because I think it was an emotive vibe than the studio stuff, which I felt was little bit too critical, because it’s hard to communicate a lot of nuances of the songs, which have like beautiful messups and other stuff like that. In the studio, you know, it was too formulaic, so it kinda lost it, but it also found it’s own kind of voice to. The new one will be more hands on studio-wise as a band, rather than working with a recording software that we’re not familiar with.

What does the aesthetic of the vinly record do for the music? Like before and when you’re listening to it. Does it enhance the experience?

I think it does. I think in general album art is wonderful. It’s one of my favorite aspects of music, is album art, and kind of looking through stacks of them. I think it’s just as important, if not more important than the music itself, because sometimes the album art has struck me more than the music. And sometimes it’s the opposite - you can have really crappy album art and a great album, so sometimes that understatement of the album art - I think that’s what’s fun about it, thinking about the visual and not visual. But when I look the cover that Sarica did along with exploding temple, I get a good sense of the like scenic narrative, like film, like stories were being told, because Sarica’s side is like personally told, so there’s like this impersonal personality that I can see.

It’s kind of funny, but the art I’ve never been truly a fan of, but the band really liked it, and I think it was really because of Zach - Sarica drew it, because she’s an artists and does a lot of paintings and drawings, and she didn’t have any intention of it being used as album art. it was just kind of like sketchbook doodles, and Zach saw when he was up in her apartment one day, and he loves that kind of stuff, you know he plays in the Ssion and Cody’s clothing style, and it’s a little bit similar to that, and I think he likes the femininity of it and the handdrawn colored pencil-ness of it, you know, and he also likes that it has a movie star on it, and he’s like, “this is great, this is just perfect,” and I was kind of like, “I can see that being edited in and I think be able to work that,” but I wasn’t really sold on it being album art, and they just kept going with it, and I’m not one to say no after a certain point. Then Sarica added in LAZY and collaged it. Then everyone saw it and was like, “Welp, this will work for now.” Then we scanned it in and told Record Machine that we were also going to use the exploding temple, then they posted that on their website, but then we also gave them the Sarica image and they posted it. But then the prints of the 50 copies were just double sided of the Sarica image.

Is the record colored?

Yeah, the record is red. It’s like clear red, and it has all the song listings on it, and it’s 33rpm, and two songs on each side filled with zine-style stuff inside of it and the outside sleeve is Sarica’s stuff. He asked and I was just like, “Red sounds cool,” and it does look really nice. It’s a beautiful 7”."

Interview with Dominant Legs Hoop of Love directors

I stumbled upon the San Francisco band, Dominant Legs, last summer to find their first EP, Young at Love and Life, as my essential summer soundtrack. Originally a duo, but now a full five-piece band, Dominant Legs create emotive songs filled with breezy guitar swing, witty lyrics and danceable charm. Ryan Lynch and Hannah Hunt act as the primary vocalists and songwriters of the group. Ryan also plays guitar in the critically-acclaimed San Franciso group, Girls, and started Dominant Legs after being laid off from an office job in 2009. Thank heavens, right?

When I found out California filmmakers Eugene Kotylrenko (whom I worked with on his first feature, 0s&1s) and Hayden Shiebler directed Dominant Legs’ first feature music video, Hoop of Love, I couldn’t resist the urge to do a short Q&A with them about the project.

How did you find yourselves to be involved with Dominant Legs?

Hayden: I’ve been friends with Hannah and Ryan for some years now, they approached me to do their first press photos when they started as a band. You find people you just work well with. Since then, we’ve collaborated on most of their artwork and photos for their releases and press. So naturally, when they decided they were making a video, they asked me to be involved because of our history with their imagery.
Eugene: Hannah was in some of the first movies I ever made about seven or eight years ago. I think I also went to the first Dominant Legs show in LA. I happened to be visiting San Francisco – actually staying with Hannah – around the time they needed a video for their first single. I was excited to work on it with Hayden, who I think has impeccable taste.

What influenced you as directors to make Hoop of Love the way it is?

H: After sifting through more complicated scenarios, we arrived at the idea to make a simple, well-executed video that complimented the feeling of the song. Hoop of Love is Dominant Leg’s first video, so there was also an intention to introduce them as people. We wanted to create a video that was graphic, stylized, decisive – bordering catalog-like, that also conveyed the band members’ characters and their music’s energy.
Any scenes that stand out as memorable to you while shooting?

H: All of the scenes at the ranch were enjoyable to shoot, hard to choose. I guess if I had to, I really enjoyed the grape/dartboard scenes or Ryan with his baseball bat. He is so emotive when he sings, we all agreed it could’ve just been that the entire video and it would’ve been equally as intriguing and entertaining.
E: I liked shooting with Hannah on the rickety wooden tree house bridge. The potential for death was always around the corner, and that gave me a rush. The last shot of them singing together and looking like they were filmed separate was great too, because I remember Sam, the DP, and the rest of us just sort of slowly figuring that look out after a few modified framings.

Where did the filming take place?

H: Gilroy, California. The house and property belongs to Hannah’s grandmother.
E: I think it’s a lil outside of Gilroy. Gilroy is the garlic capital of the world.
Any new projects coming up that either of you are excited about?

H: I am excited to shoot a video for a San Francisco band called Pamela this month in Reno, Nevada. Additionally, a new video for Wax Idols, whom which I made my first music video ever for.
E: I recently did a little video for myself with dogs and marines that I think is beautiful, which wasn’t really sanctioned by any band. Right now I’m mostly focused on writing two scripts: one is an erotic thriller, that I’m actually collaborating on with Hannah, and the other is a Horror Comedy. Although, I would be excited to do another video. I’d like to do something in the style of some French directors from 80′s I like – Leos Carax, Jean Jacques Beneix, the Blier films made around that decade.

Fine Hoods – New Sensations (2011) – Fine Hoods is a newer art punk band from greater KC, who have only been peeking out every once in a while to play a show, most recently with the bizarrely undervalued Nature Boys . The band is two parts Lazy (Brock Potucek, Michael Boles) and one part The Fairer Sex (Brenton Wheeler). FH keeps the same ’70s art scene vibe as Lazy, culling what they can from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground’s more lo-fi and heroin influenced offerings of that era. Add to that Potucek’s monotone vocals which conjure an image of Peter Murphy moving to NYC in the ’70s. This EP is $5.

Fine Hoods colored the dive afterward with crushed, queasy guitar and synth pop. Its inflated frequency range is otherworldly and erratic, but the songs poke tuneful holes through the white noise that suffocates and distracts the music. PopRally, in conjunction with MoMA PS1's Saturday Sessions, invites you to the three-night debut performances of BENT by SSION. Featuring a selection of songs from the new album BENT, SSION's loosely narrative spectacle—incorporating video backdrops, costumes, and props—touches on subjects from riot grrrl party anthems about dieting and dying in L.A. to having a hit record in purgatory and creating an underwater dance club. Various collaborators will make guest appearances.

SSION, created and led by Cody Critcheloe, is a continuously mutating Kansas City–based music and performance collective. Through the mediums of music video and live performance, the group focuses on visuals, theatrics, and music that blur the lines of fantasy and reality.

Saturday Sessions is a program of events designed to introduce wide-ranging directions in performance. The experimental program is structured around collaboration and focuses on engaging MoMA PS1 visitors in a unique experience.

The performance will begin at 8:30 p.m. each night. Admission includes the SSION performance and a cocktail reception.

Working on a painting even the week before her death, vivacious Kansas artist Patricia Ruth (Pudden) Potucek, Hutchinson, 86, died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Promise Medical Center from complications from cardiac arrest. Pat was born in rural Cowley County, Kansas, on February 13, 1925, the daughter of Leo and Ruth (Clark) Pudden. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1943. Educated at the Kansas City Art Institute after World War II, Pat earned national notoriety early in her professional career for a controversial mural completed for the VFW. As a young woman, she won national awards as Display Decorator for Newman's Department Store in Arkansas City, where she is remembered for her festival floats and art fair participation. She was offered work as a set designer in Hollywood.

She married Charles William Potucek, Jr., in 1949 and continued to study art at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. She followed her husband on his agricultural business career to Tribune, Dodge City, and Garden City, Ks, at which time she was the President of the Southwest Kansas Art Association and won the Kansas Press Woman's Award for Children's Book Illustration for Ida Rath's Carrot of Gold.

Charles (Chuck) and Pat moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1962. Pat worked for Wiley's and Pegues department stores as illustrator and display director. She also contributed illustrations to The Hutchinson News. Chuck was General Manager and Vice President at FarMarCo, a grain marketing company. They divorced in 1972, but remained friends until his death in 2002. Pat was recognized by the National Watercolor Association, Pastel Society of America, and received hundreds of awards for portraiture, murals and still life paintings in many media. Her work with papier mache was documented in national publications and craft books. She was known for her pen and ink illustrations for cookbooks and corporate publications. Her paintings are in the collections of ambassadors and presidents. She won many art awards at the Kansas State Fair beginning with the Best in Show 1950 for an oil portrait of her father entitled Kansas Farmer. She exhibited at the Kansas State Fair regularly. She was a regular exhibitor at the Hutchinson Art Annual Spring Art Fair until 2009. She donated many paintings in support of numerous charitable organizations and schools. She is remembered for an effort to paint whimsical caricatures on fire hydrants to commemorate the American bicentennial. Pat completed more then 250 murals during her lifetime, including major murals located throughout Kansas. She is included in the book Kansas Murals A Traveler's Guide by Lora Jost and Dave Loewenstein. A tour of Pat's murals in Hutchinson has become a popular tourist activity. She was a frequent art instructor for the Leisure Arts Center and Delos Smith Center. She was a member of the Hutchinson Art Association, Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Cecelia's Circle, and Reno County Democratic Women's Club. Pat nurtured her six children while contributing her skills as art educator, "chalk-talk" demonstrator, 4-H leader, Boy Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader, and PTA President. From her youth as a USO volunteer, she was a life-long dancer. She had many dance partners through the years.

Her parents and her brother, Robert Francis Pudden predeceased Pat.

She is survived by her six children Monica Bryant and her husband Michael, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Marcia Kathleen Streepy and her husband Reverend Robert Shawn, Shawnee, Ks; Lesle Knop and her husband Doug, Paola, Ks.; Scott William Potucek and his wife Anne, Hutchinson; Charles Todd Potucek, Independence, Mo.; and Shannon Elliott and her husband Paul, Kingwood, Texas; and 18 grandchildren: Yvette Hatton, El Cerrito, Calif.; Tyler Bryant, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Jessica Lynn; Prairie Village; Leah Olson, Shawnee; Lauren Frost, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Stephanie Frost, Hillary Carter; Prairie Village; Brodie Knop, Shawnee; Brom Knop, Kansas City, Mo., Cameron Potucek, Nickerson; Rachel Potucek, Los Angeles, Calif.; Rebecca Potucek, Hutchinson; Brock Potucek, Kansas City, Mo., Nathan Henry, Hutchinson; Andy Henry, Chicago, Ill.; Elizabeth Elliott, Dallas, Texas.; Amanda and Alexis Elliott, Kingwood, Texas; and 13 great-grandchildren: Julia, Christopher, Hailey, Nicholas, Richard, Kate, Nora, Leo, Ethan, Beatrix, Greyson, Brexon, Arthur and arriving soon Samantha. Sisters-in-law Marjorie McCauley, Virginia Finley and Rita Miller, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, also survive her.

A Service of Remembrance will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, 1219 N. Main Street, Hutchinson. The praying of the Rosary will be Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, at 1:30 p.m. followed at 2 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial, the Father Joseph Eckberg, celebrant. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pat Potucek State Fair Art Award Fund at the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, or the Good Samaritan Society, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main Street, Hutchinson, Kansas 67501. The family extends its appreciation for the many expressions of sympathy and kindness at her death and for the care received at Promise Medical Regional Medical Center and at Good Samaritan Center. Local artist left mark 'all over globe'

Pat Potucek, however, didn't talk about the fact much, a woman humble about her artwork. But no one can contest that the 86-year-old Potucek, who died Saturday, didn't leave her legacy throughout the state and beyond.

In fact, the artist painted more than 250 murals during her lifetime, mostly across Kansas. Her work graces offices, city parks and churches, as well as homes.

"She was the most prolific artist I've ever known," said her daughter, Lesle Knop of Paola, adding that her mother's work "is all over the globe."

It also is scattered about Hutchinson.

Take the mural at the Dental Center, for instance. Potucek traded her art for dental work. She also traded for other day-to-day necessities, whether it was groceries or to get her vehicle fixed.

"She was a barterer," said her son, Scott Potucek, Hutchinson, of the landscapes, still life, portraits and murals. "She got paid for some, but she also traded her art for things. She was old school."

It's just one of the many stories Scott Potucek and his siblings have been remembering this weekend.

Potucek was born in Cowley County, the daughter of Leo and Ruth Pudden. She excelled at art even at an early age, eventually attending the Kansas City Art Institute after World War II, where she was influenced by the works of Thomas Hart Benton and other Depression-era artists. Her first job was at Newman's Department Store in Arkansas City. It's also where she painted one of her most controversial murals for the VFW - voluptuous mermaids with their hair and bubbles carefully located.

"The women thought it was scandalous," Knop said, adding that they walked her out of the building.

The soldiers who had returned home from the war, however, walked her back inside. The Associated Press featured the incident.

But her work was already becoming known. She was offered a job as a set designer in Hollywood, and Charles Hall, the founder of Hallmark, sent Potucek a personal letter asking her to work for him.

She declined, getting married and having a family instead.

She passed her love of the arts to her children, said daughter Monica Bryant, an art teacher at a Catholic school in California.

"Growing up, we were washing palettes and brushes along with the dinner dishes," Bryant said.

Potucek completed art in mediums including watercolor, oils and paper mache, which was documented in national publications and craft books. She donated many paintings to charitable organizations and schools.

She may be best known, however, for her murals. She's included in the book "Kansas Murals: A Travel's Guide." And a tour of her murals has become a popular tourist activity, Bryant said.

"Each mural I paint is a different challenge," Potucek once said.

For instance, she's painted everything from five generations of farming to three generations of a telephone company. That work moves from an old-fashioned wall telephone, made of walnut, to a cell phone.

Other places her work is displayed includes paintings of angels by the altar at St. Theresa's and a scene for Smith's Market.

Scenes at Smith's change from an Amish woman in the field to gardening, canning and even an old-time fruit and vegetable market.

Owner Chris Barnes said the work was painted in 1988 and 1992, with Potucek climbing scaffolding and ladders to complete the scenes.

She even bartered for that job, said Barnes' father, Earl Barnes, noting he paid her some and she also took some of her work for produce.

"We've had a lot of compliments on it," Earl Barnes said.

Hutchinson Art Center Director Mark Rassette said Potucek would call him about ideas for artwork or just to see what was happening. He recalled one of her ideas to put scenes of "The Wizard of Oz" on the walls of Promise Regional Medical Center's tunnel.

"We just have to get the money, she'd say," Rassette said with a chuckle, adding that, of course, Potucek wanted the job.

She worked hard, he said. She helped support her family through painting.

"She was a kind, positive person," he said. "Art was important to her. And her art spoke to a lot of people. A lot of people liked it across the spectrum."

Scott Potucek said his mother had a heart attack in February but stayed active. She was working on a painting the week before she died and was ready to go dancing - one of her favorite pastimes besides paintings, when she went into cardiac arrest.

She died Saturday surrounded by her six children, as well as several grandchildren - about 20 family members in all who were singing and praying around her, he said.

Bryant said the family would like to make her work more available online, as well as her story. They're also discussing potential ways to continue her legacy in Hutchinson.
