Obsession and South Bitch Diet Reviews

Permanent Records reviews of recent releases.

Tape - Lazy - Obsession - $4.99 - TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK IN CHICAGO
"We scored a grip of tapes from Kansas City band Lazy when they were in town playing Bitchpork last weekend (caught the band's set too - wowzers!) & thought we'd pass along the goodness! Lazy roar outta the gate with punk laced R'n'R in the vein of the more esoteric bands of the classic era - i.e. Wire, Hubble Bubble, The Fall (and a dash of Wipers for good measure) who knew their way around a pop hook - dark & aggressive, but with a confident swagger that makes the songs swing a bit! What sets this tape apart a lil' more is the tunes - hooks for days that stay stuck in your head (Will we be able to get the chorus of "Childhood Wonder" out of our heads?? We don't know!) It's highly recommended you don't be LAZY & grip this now - let it become your new OBSESSION. (yikes, sorry guys) RECOMMENDED!"

"Tape - South Bitch Diet - South Bitch Diet - $4.99 - BUY - LISTEN

Side project release from Lazy main-man Brock Potucek - weirdo, lo-fi, 4-track, pop ramblings that fade in & out of clarity - not unlike Bob Pollard jamming with Psychic TV. There's a special kind of "everything but the kitchen sink" vibe here - seemingly disparate elements sit side-by-side (Syd-laced pop songs, lo-fi GBV majesty, minimal synth & soundscapes, & warped, troglodyte country jams all make an appearance), but Potucek holds it all together with gleeful aplomb! We're not sure what's happening over there in K.C. but consider our interest piqued. It may be too early to call but we're inclined to say that this may be a dark-horse runner for a shop cassette fave of 2012! Recommended!"
